India has grounded four squadrons of MiG-21 fighters after losing four of them in crashes this year. Two crashed after the engines failed, one due to pilot error, and the fourth when it struck a bird. MiG-21s account for about 45% of India's very high aircraft crash rate (about 20 per year). The Indian parliament has called for all MiG-21s to be replaced as soon as possible with new locally-built Light Combat Aircraft.--Stephen V Cole
