The US Army's upgraded M270A1 Multiple-Launch Rocket System has completed its test firing with the full range of MLRS rockets, including the M25 standard rocket, the Extended Range rocket, the Reduced Range practice rocket, the European-built AT-2, and the ATACMS (Block I, IA, and II). The upgraded launchers will reach operational units in 2001. The M270A1 includes numerous improvements. Its computers can process huge blocks of data for new smart munitions. Its built-in GPS system provides more accuracy. The mechanical elements of the system can reload and train toward the target more quickly.--Stephen V Cole
