Artillery: March 5, 2001

South Africa is developing a long-range 155mm artillery shell able to reach targets 70km away. The PRO-RAM shells, developed by the Somchem Division of Denel, include a ramjet propulsion system. The new shell is longer than the existing Velocity Enhanced Long Range Artillery Projectile (a base-bleed round) and costs 50% more, but retains the same lethality. The shell incorporates GPS and a drag brake to achieve high accuracy.--Stephen V Cole
