The US Army has contracted with AirScan (a Florida-based company) to provide it with real time manned air reconnaissance over the Balkans due to a shortage of its own surveillance aircraft. AirScan provides similar services to Colombia, and flies planes over Angolan oil pipelines to report any leaks or damage. The Army has required that AirScan provide planes with six hours of endurance, two complete crews to allow round-the-clock missions, and the ability to transmit video images for 50 miles.--Stephen V Cole
