: Canada reports that the world is still far from free of anti-personnel land mines, and that more mines had been laid in Angola and Kosovo, but that some progress has been made:
@ The US has banned the export of anti-personnel land mines.
@ Russia has stopped production of some types of anti-personnel land mines.
@ Ukraine is destroying its land mine stocks with Canadian help.
@ Twenty signatory nations have destroyed 14 million landmines.
@ The number of countries producing landmines has dropped from 54 before the treaty to 16 now.
Canada complains that "warlords, militias, and unscrupulous commercial interests" were playing a role to perpetuate the use of these weapons. --Stephen V Cole
