Navy SEALs found themselves caught short when war broke out in Afghanistan. Superbly equipped to operate against coastal targets, the SEALs had to scrounge up new logistical support quickly, as well as communications equipment needed to operate with the army and air force units that they were working with. SOCOM ended up buying new multiband two way radios from commercial suppliers and the army provided logistical support (food, shelter, transportation, medical, ammunition resupply and the like) for the SEALs. Over a hundred SEALs continued to operate at sea, providing many of the search parties for checking ships, off the Pakistani coast and in the Persian Gulf, for al Qaeda members. This has long been an assignment the SEALs are well suited for, especially when there might be armed resistance on the ship to be searched.
