Naval Air: October 5, 2000

In one of its most embarrassing victories, the Black Aces of Navy Fighter Squadron 41 (which fly F-14 Tomcats) won the annual McClusky Award for excellence in .... bombing. The secret is the recent addition of the LANTIRN targeting pod, which has made the Tomcat an outstanding bomber. The McClusky Award was dominated by A-6 Intruders until they were phased out, and has since been dominated by F-18 Hornets. The powerful Tomcat, designed to carry six of the heavy Phoenix missiles over extreme distances, has the muscle to carry plenty of bombs.--Stephen V Cole
