India is upgrading 72 of its MiG-21 fighters with Russian Kopyo radars. With a detection range of 57 kilometers, and a lock on (so a missile can be fired) range of 40 kilometers, these radars allow the pilot to track eight targets at the same time and launch two air-to-air missiles at the same time. The Kopyo allows the MiG-21 to fire longer range radar guided missiles, as well as anti-ship missiles. Although the Kopyo radars cost over two million dollars each, they turn the elderly MiG-21s into formidable missile warfare aircraft. Using long range missiles, the MiG-21 can take down a more modern aircraft without much risk.
