In an unusual move, an item of military food will be made available to the civilian market. The item in question is a 280 calorie energy bar included with MREs or separately. The energy bar is similar to those long on the civilian market. The military one contains soy protein, dried fruit, chocolate, 17 vitamins and minerals, 10 grams of protein, 8 grams of fat and 42 grams of carbohydrates. The military energy bar has been in use since the late 1990s, and is popular with the troops. It comes in chocolate, apple-cinnamon, cranraspberry, peanut butter and raspberry flavors. The army has been trying to develop effective energy bars since World War II. Back then, there was the D Ration, a 600 calorie bar containing chocolate, sugar, dry milk and oatmeal. Eating it was compared to chewing chocolate flavored tree bark. The army has licensed their current energy bar to a civilian outfit that will market it as the HooAH! bar and make it available nationwide for two dollars each. You can check it out online at www.hooahbar.com.
