Submarines: Indian Boats Get Nuclear Missiles

Archives

July 10, 2007: After sixteen years of development, India's submarine launched cruise missile, the Sagarika, is ready for service. Basically, Sagarika is similar to the American Tomahawk cruise missile. The Sagarika has a range of 1,000 kilometers, carries a half ton warhead, and is designed to deliver a nuclear weapon. There have been three successful tests of the Sagarika, and it was expected to enter service soon. But project details were kept out of the press, possibly because of the involvement of Israeli firms in the project. Israel developed and deployed a sub launched cruise missile seven years ago. India and Israel work closely on numerous defense and weapons projects.
