Submarines: January 26, 2000

Half of the crewmen on the attack submarine Topeka were the first human beings to welcome in the new year (2000). The submarine, demonstrating its precision navigation abilities, passed under the exact point where the International Date Line crosses the Equator at exactly midnight. Those on the starboard (right) side were in the year 2000 while those on the port (left) side were still stuck in 1999.--Stephen V Cole
