Submarines: January 8, 2001

The US Navy has christened its newest submarine, the LSV-2 Cutthroat. This is actually a scale-model of the new Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines, albeit a very large one. The Cutthroat is 33.5 meters long and three meters in diameter, and can be reconfigured to experiment with various hull designs for that class of sub. The LSV-1 Kokanee was used several years ago to test the hull design of the Seawolf.--Stephen V Cole
