Responding to the collision with a Japanese fishing boat, the Navy is testing small cylindrical radars that could be added to a periscope mast and supplement visual observations in bad weather. Radars of this type have been tested on helicopters and UAVs. Navy subs could get this equipment in about three years.--Stephen V Cole
