 A close friend and ally of president Karzai was shot dead in the north. Taliban or al Qaeda are suspected. Outside of Kandahar, armed men invaded a school and burned part of it down. The raiders claimed to be Taliban who were fighting against "un-Islamic" education (ie, studying anything except religious subjects.) In southern Afghanistan, troops from the new Afghan army fought a group of Taliban, killing eight of them and arrested another 15. One Afghan soldier was killed.
