President Boutefilka has responded to the massive demonstrations by giving the armed forces more power to suppress the popular uprisings. Algeria's population is dominated by a younger, largely unemployed generation. It's not just the Berbers who are upset with all the Islamic rebel violence and economic stagnation. The Arab speaking majority is equally upset. Over 2,300 have been injured so far and the government refuses to negotiate with the rioters.
