The government denied that the documents were real. These were the "Tiananmen Papers," which were documents leaked to the media last year showing government deliberations leading up to the army attack on Tiananmen Square demonstrators in 1989. But since the papers got out, the government has launched an investigation and at least 23 people have been arrested.
