In eastern India, communist rebels seized a freight train and disrupted rail traffic for most of a day. The rebels were demanding the release of one of their leaders.

During April and May, a large Indian army operation destroyed rebel camps in southern Kashmir. While over a hundred rebels were killed, another 200-300 escaped. Now some of these are being spotted slowly moving, via forest trails, into northern Kashmir. The rebels are probably in bad shape, not having access to much food during their backwoods journey. And these rebels appear to be headed for the same roads to be used by 100,000 Hindu pilgrims this month. So the army has increased it's patrols in the mountains and forests, hoping to get the the rebels before the rebels get to the pilgrims.
