Pakistan believes that al Qaeda is fleeing to other countries. Army and police pressure inside Pakistan have led to the arrest of 63 al Qaeda suspects in the last five weeks. Pakistan has basically declared war on al Qaeda in self-defense, because al Qaeda has called for the overthrow of the current government, and has made several assassination attempts on senior government officials. Pakistan also denies American media reports that there was a major al Qaeda planning meeting last March, in the tribal areas along the Afghan border. The government agrees that al Qaeda was operating training camps in that area, at least until the army moved in three months ago. Pakistan did acknowledge that it received convincing proof from American intelligence agencies about the al Qaeda activities along the Afghan border. This led to the large army and police operations in that area, operations that are still going on.
