Kurdish War: January 14, 2003

Archives

Turkish sources report that Kurd rebels (PKK) have sent the Turkish government a warning that they will begin a "civil disobedience campaign" unless Turkey agrees to improve PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan's prison conditions. "Apo" Ocalan is currently being held on the prison island of Imrali. One Kurdish newspaper reportedly quoted a KADEK official (KADEK is the new "party name" of the PKK) as saying that Apo's situation in prison must improve by February 15th. Frankly, this is another sign that the Kurd War is indeed in its final stages. This is political action, designed to embarrass Turkey with the EU, and not a call to arms.
